A temporary residence permit (TRP)

A temporary residence permit (TRP) gives the right to stay in the Republic of Kazakhstan for the period of validity of an employee’s labour contract, but not more than one year. If the labour contract is concluded for a period of less than one year, the temporary residence permit is issued for this period. Issuance of temporary residence permits to foreigners and stateless persons in the Republic of Kazakhstan to undergo inpatient treatment in Kazakhstani medical institutions; 5. Issuance of temporary residence permits to foreigners and stateless persons in the Republic of Kazakhstan to carry out missionary activities; 6. Issuance of temporary residence permits to foreigners and stateless persons in the Republic of Kazakhstan for entrepreneurial activities in accordance with the legislation of the Republic of Kazakhstan (business immigrants) It is important to keep track of the period of validity of the temporary residence permit, as untimely departure of a foreign citizen after the expiry of this period entails a fine for both the foreign citizen and the receiving party/employer according to Articles 517 and 518 of the Code of Administrative Offences of the Republic of Kazakhstan. What is the deadline for obtaining a temporary residence permit?
  • For citizens of Armenia, Belarus, Kyrgyzstan, Russia – within 90 days from the date of entry into Kazakhstan.
  • For citizens of Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan and Tajikistan – within 30 calendar days from the date of entry into Kazakhstan.
The authorised period of stay of immigrants in the Republic of Kazakhstan is coming to an end:
  • for immigrants who arrived in the Republic of Kazakhstan in the order not requiring a visa – after thirty calendar days from the date of crossing the State border of the Republic of Kazakhstan, a total of ninety calendar days during each period of one hundred and eighty calendar days, unless another procedure is established by the agreement of the Republic of Kazakhstan with the relevant party or the Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan;
  • for citizens of member states of the Eurasian Economic Union – upon expiry of ninety calendar days from the day of crossing the State border of the Republic of Kazakhstan, totalling ninety calendar days within each period of one hundred and eighty calendar days;
  • for immigrants who arrived on the basis of a visa to enter the Republic of Kazakhstan – upon expiry of the visa;
  • for citizens of states with which the Republic of Kazakhstan has ratified international treaties defining other terms of stay – upon expiry of the terms specified in these treaties;
  • for immigrants who have obtained a temporary residence permit – upon expiry of this permit;
At the same time, the temporary residence permit does not give the right to register as an individual entrepreneur or to own real estate in Kazakhstan. If a foreigner changes his/her place of work, he/she must renew his/her permit within 15 days and have it renewed by another employer. If a foreigner, having received a temporary residence permit, leaves Kazakhstan and returns again, the employer must notify the migration service of the arrival of his/her employee within three days; there is no need to obtain a new residence permit until the expiry date of the previous permit.
